The School of Law was established in 1924. In 2006, Cynthia Nance became our first female Dean and our first African American Dean. Our rich history is exemplified by the outstanding contributions of faculty and alumni to the world, the nation and the state. Former President Bill Clinton and former First Lady, now Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton were both members of the faculty. The late Senators J. William Fulbright and Claude Pepper served on the faculty. Alumni have held and continue to occupy important federal and state judicial posts, including George Haley ('52), who served as U.S. Ambassador to Gambia; Rodney Slater ('80), former U.S. Secretary of Transportation; and former U.S. Congressmen Jay Dickey ('63), W. Asa Hutchinson ('75) former director of the DEA and undersecretary for Border and Transportation, Security of the Homeland Security Department; and U.S. Senator Mark Pryor (88'). Another alumnus, Mike Beebe, is currently serving as Governor of Arkansas. In addition to the regular law program, the school offers the only LL.M. degree in Agricultural Law in the nation. In this connection, the law school houses the National Agricultural Law Center.

The law school admits a class of approximately 135 to 150 students every year in the fall. Additionally, approximately 10 graduate students are admitted into the Agricultural Law LL.M. program. A full‑time faculty of 36 assures a low student‑teacher ratio and enables faculty and students to form close and beneficial professional relationships.

In addition to the Arkansas Law Review, published quarterly, the law school publishes the Arkansas Law Notes annually, and the Journal of Food Law and Policy. Our students also assist in the publication of the Journal of Islamic Law and Culture. The National Agricultural Law Center regularly publishes articles and other items on‑line, and maintains an extensive database relating to agricultural law at www.nationalaglawcenter.org.

The law school's advocacy skills program, coordinated by the student‑run Board of Advocates, includes multiple appellate moot court, trial advocacy, client counseling and negotiation competitions. The law school regularly sends teams to five interschool moot court competitions, and in the past decade, U of A students have won first, second, third or fourth place seven times; have advanced to the quarter‑finals 14 times, and have won six best brief, five best oralist awards, and one oral advocacy award. In the National Mock Trial competitions, in each of the past four years, at least one of these student teams advanced to the semi‑finals at the regional level. In 2006‑2007, one team won their regional moot court competition, one team won the Chapter of the Year award at the regional level, two teams reached the quarter‑finals, and one team won second place at the national level. The law school has had similar success in the National Negotiation Competition and the Client Counseling Competition.

The law school is located in Fayetteville‑‑a town of approximately 60,000 in the Ozarks.  The University has a total enrollment of about 18,000.
