Bar Profile:
The Virginia State Bar was created by the General Assembly of Virginia in 1938 as an administrative agency of the Supreme Court of Virginia. The State Bar operates under Rules of the Virginia Supreme Court and bylaws adopted by a Council, its governing body which is elected pursuant to the Rules of Court. As the mandatory (unified) bar of Virginia, the State Bar's membership is comprised of all attorneys licensed to practice law in the state.

The principal purpose of the Virginia State Bar is to uphold and maintain high ethical standards among members of the legal profession. As an administrative arm of the Virginia Supreme Court, the Virginia State Bar is charged with the responsibility of regulating the profession and handling disciplinary matters involving attorneys, as well as unauthorized practice of law complaints. While the State Bar is primarily a regulatory agency, it also provides essential educational and professional services for its members, including administration of a mandatory professionalism course for new members.
