History
The lawyers first organized a bar association encompassing what is now the State of Oklahoma when the Oklahoma and Indian Territory Bar Association was formed in 1904. The Oklahoma Bar Association as presently constituted, was created by Rules of the Oklahoma Supreme Court promulgated in 1939.

Purposes
The Oklahoma Supreme Court created the Oklahoma Bar Association in the public interest, for the advancement of the administration of justice according to law, and to aid the courts in carrying on the administration of justice; to foster and maintain on the part of those engaged in the practice of law high ideals of integrity, learning, competence and public service, and high standards of conduct; to provide a forum for the discussion of subjects pertaining to the practice of law, the science of jurisprudence, and law reform; to carry on a continuing program of legal research in technical fields of substantive law, practice and procedure, and to make reports and recommendations thereon; to encourage the formation and activities of local bar associations; to encourage practices that will advance and improve the honor and dignity of the legal profession; and to the end that the responsibility of the legal profession and the individual members thereof, may be more effectively and efficiently discharged in the public interest.

Current Activities and Concerns
The Oklahoma Bar Association is governed by a 17 member Board of Governors elected primarily by the House of Delegates. The Board of Governors meets monthly. There are 36 committees and 23 sections in the Association. The Oklahoma Bar Association is a member of the Southern Conference of Bar Presidents.

Areas of current emphasis include: imrovement on bar facilities; implementing a mentor program for young lawyers; expansion of LRE program; expansion of Lawyers Helping Lawyers Program; assistance to solo and small firm practioners.
