Bar Profile:
The Idaho State Bar is a self-governing state agency of the State of Idaho. The present unified Idaho State Bar had its origin in 1923 and 1925 when the legislature established the present Idaho State Bar and the Board of Commissioners. As an "integrated" state bar, it is mandatory that all lawyers in the state belong before practicing law. The Idaho State Bar is governed by five Commissioners, elected from the seven districts into which the state is divided. Commissioners serve for staggered three years terms.

The basic duties of the Idaho State Bar are to administer the admission (bar exam) process, conduct the annual licensing of attorneys, and serve as the disciplinary body for attorneys who violate the Idaho Rules of Professional Conduct. The Idaho State Bar is financed primarily by license fees and application fees paid by attorneys and bar exam applicants. No tax dollars are used.

The Bar operates under authority delegated by the Supreme Court of Idaho through its rule making power, particularly in the area of admissions and discipline. The rules that govern the process are known as the " Idaho Bar Commission Rules."

Mission Statement
The mission of the Idaho State Bar is to administer granting the privilege to practice law in Idaho; to control and regulate the legal profession; to protect the public from the unauthorized practice of law and from unprofessional conduct by members of the bar; to promote high standards of professional conduct; and to aid in the advancement of the administration of justice.

Goals
Goal 1 Promote high standards of professional conduct by members of the bar.
Goal 2 Furnish programs and services which improve opportunities for professional growth and enhance the competency of members of the bar.
Goal 3 Promote the public's access to legal services.
Goal 4 Enhance public understanding of and respect for the law and the legal system.
Goal 5 Aid in the advancement of the administration of justice.
Goal 6 Maintain effective state bar governance and management.
